Yesterday saw the release of the Dredd movie in the UK and yeah, like a bad nerd I waited till today to pick it up.
Seems to be going down well. It’s topping the chart on Amazon and I had to go to three stores before I found one that hadn’t sold out. Sainsbury’s Pontypridd by the way, which now HAS sold out as I got the last copy. It’s also too late to pick up a breakfast if that was looking enticing. Anyway, flying off the shelves apparently and the nice lady in Tesco told me I was the fourth person this morning to ask if there were any more copies hidden away anywhere .
Picture quality on the blu-ray is amazing. The film does lose something going to 2D but the disk has the 3D option for if I ever go for a new tv. Extras could possibly be a bit better. There’s 30 minutes of interviews but the other features can only really be classed as featurettes as none clock in over 4 minutes. Maybe I was just spoiled by the brilliant 2hr making of on my Amazing Spider-Man blu-ray. Seeing Alex Garland sat with John Wagner on the set made me wish for a joint commentaty from them but alas there isn’t one.
Online reaction? Well on my facebook and twitter and stuff it so far seems to be a lot of Americans doing the “DAMN! Why didnt anyone tell me it was this good when it was in the cinema?” thing so its getting great, if a little late, word of mouth. Also some noise from the UK faithful along the lines of “Let’s hope the dvd sales are massive as that might give us a sequel”. Am I optimistic this will happen? Realistically no. Am I joining in with those who are smugly pouring scorn on those who do still have their fingers crossed this happens? Fuck no. The fact we got a Dredd movie this good was a fucking miracle. Why not hold out for another one?

Watched it in 2D last night, having seen it in 3D at the cinema, and enjoyed it even more. Without those bloody glasses on the colours really shone, and the slo-mo effects were less about ‘bringing beauty into an ugly society’ than they were about creating something close to the pacing of action you get frame-by-frame in a painted comic.
I’ll probably watch it again tonight.
Had mine on the Doormat in Hengoed (Yes more Welshmen) on Saturday morning.
Then had to endure an 8 hour wait till the wifebot would let us watch it, but when we did it was just as good as When it was viewed in 3D.
But!
Any one else think the menu’s looked a little ……um….mid 90′s? (layout, colour & fonts etc) or am I just being a picky SOAB?
Still no release date for Mordor so I may have to get my nephew to get this shipped over when he sends me Skyrim.
Can’t you get the Aussie disc cheaper? I hear the colour is sightly saturated in the UK BD so that may be the better route. I have both (and a few others) on order anyway so…
Aussie disc it is! Providing they haven’t all been burnt to a crisp I shall get one ordered immediately. Well thought, sir!
Get the U.S. Region 1 disc, the picture is nigh on flawless and you get ALL special features included across the varying regions…
Sold.
Hawkins, you”re fired.
Bah! And here I was thinking I was never employed in the first place! I’ll report on here when i’ve gathered all 4 editions I’ve ordered as to which seem’s the superior version.
Good thinking. You’re rehired!
