I was lucky enough to see Judge Minty recently so even though we’ve had one review up on here already I felt I should also chip in. First though, here’s that teaser trailer again
Before seeing it I suppose my big question was
“I love Dredd and all that. In order to enjoy this do I need to lower my expectations at all? It is a fan film after all”
So to answer myself
They really have done an amazing job of putting the comic up on the screen. This is gonna be one of those fan films that gets serious nerd cred when it eventually goes viral and is actually so good I expect it to pull in new readers when it does.
Even having read the script I was still amazed by the ambition of it all. The film opens in Mega City One and it’s not some static backdrop or tightly framed bit of background… its the city as you’d expect to see it in the comics. I’m sure I’m spoiling nothing if I say the last 3/4 take place during Judge Minty’s Long Walk and again it all looks just how you’d imagine. I’ll be honest I was expecting it to all be a bit “old school Doctor Who” so the fact it looked this good and with more professional looking cgi than any fan film has a right to is beyond cool.
Obviously the uniforms look spot on as they’re the ones now available from Planet Replicas and they’ve also done a great job of making both the citizens of Mega City One and those of the Cursed Earth look the part. The main bad guy is especially effective and credit has to go both to his performance and they way they shoot him to really sell him as a scary, insane bastard of a threat.
Of course the whole thing really hangs on Edmund Dehn’s performance and he does a brilliant job of selling a Judge who has seen and done too much. You feel the weight and sadness on him but he still sells the fact that beneath it all he’s still a Judge and is fully aware of what that means.
Other cast members I should mention… well of course we have Mr Burdis doing both Judge and bad guy duties and while I’ d love nothing more than to take the piss I gotta say he does a great job as both. Also we have Lauren Integra who is shown in fine form in Anderson mode via a digital billboard and also as a Cursed Earth denizen who has a run in with Minty.
Bottom line on this… if you’re a 2000AD fan you OWE it to yourself to see this. I’m sure it’ll eventually end up online but if you do get the chance to see this on a screen with a gang of like minded people then, and I hope you can pardon my french here, you’re in for a fucking treat. I know it’ll be playing at Canny Con on the 8th of December and I’m sure it’ll be doing the rounds of other cons, any news of which we will of course report on here. What? Is it going to be at Cardiff Con in March? I have no idea.
Hats off to EVERYONE involved in this. You’ve made something to be damn proud of.
