A quick review written with the aid of a few beers as I realise it’s been AGES since I’ve actually done one myself. You’ll excuse me if I rush, I have a newly formed Skyrim addiction to tend to. Oh, and as I’ve been pulled on it before, as there’s no “WRITTEN BY” that means this shit is my own
Whats that Slaine? You’re asking me if you’ll be able to dodge giant axes? I’m saying when the time comes, you won’t have to
So yeah, its a beautiful image but while it’s probably supposed to be him getting knocked back I cant help but think he’s doing a bit of Matrix style slo-mo dodging. I suppose after last week’s splash page we should be glad it’s just a giant axe he’s avoiding.
So the story wraps up and Dredd takes down the main bad guy even if he isn’t able to stop the massacre of over a thousand citizens.
Listeners of the podcast may have heard me bickering with Flint about the whole Wagner vs “Filler” argument but this and the last Wagner story do kinda fall into the filler category for me… if there is such a thing. I’m sure they were both seeding little nuggets that will play out in the long run as Wagner is a fucking master at stuff like that, but these have felt a bit like anyone could have written them. Well not ANYONE obviously but any of the talented stable of Dredd writers 2000AD have at their disposal. Some really nice touches though especially the news report getting Jimmy’s name wrong and it’ll be interesting to see what comes next.
Art wise, John McCrea can do no wrong. Brilliant art and composition, full of energy with some great design work. Really hope we’re gonna see lots more from him in the prog unless of course he’s too busy doing more Mars Attacks as I seriously loved that.
INDIGO PRIME :
What the hell? Ok, so I really didnt like the last arc of this as there was way too much of the kind of “nobody actually talks like that” dialogue that makes me wish Jonathan Hickman would get hit by a bus. BUT I’m really enjoying this and am glad to say my initial attitude when I saw this was coming back has been given a total kicking. Same batshit crazy ideas as before but now they feel part of the story rather than something that keeps having to be explained with huge word balloons of techno-bollocks. Enjoying it to the point where I’m thinking of getting the trade to see if the older stuff will be a bit more accessable as a result. Hats off to Mr Smith, it’s a pleasure to have been proven wrong.
Art? STUNNING. I’ve always liked Lee Carter’s work. He even made Necrophim enjoyable, but it’s like someone has spent the last six months beating him with a talent stick. So good it’s making his old stuff look bad and his old stuff was awesome. And that last panel? Beautifully creepy.
Also GIANT MONSTER SEX! You can’t go wrong. Additional points for avoiding the Pacific Rimming joke they were probably dying to make.
Ok, this one is gonna be quick. This rocks. As much as I’ve liked Slaine in the past this art is so good that any older stuff looks kinda wrong now. Just brilliant. Can see how some might not like this as you can read the thing in a minute but it really seems to be written specifically to let Simon Davis work his magic
THARGS 3RILLERS :
Did enjoy this 3Rillers. Was actually a cool three parter that rattled along and made the most of each of it’s three issues. Nice creepy art that totally worked for the story and great pacing in the script. Only negative would be one I brought to the table…. an inability not to compare it to The Thing.
Great art, fun story but to be honest this one had kinda outstayed its welcome a bit with me. Starting to feel like one of those creator owned Meg stories you know is being stretched out to “we can reprint it as a book later” length. Am enjoying it but waiting for it to wrap up.
Pick of the Prog? Did love the Slaine but giving it to Indigo Prime for winning me over
