Scarlet Traces : The Great Game
Ian Edgington and D’Israeli
Review by Seth
“The Great Game” published by Dark Horse is the sequel to the Edge’s (not to be confused with wearisome band U2’s guitarist) and the D’emon D’raughtsman “Scarlet Traces”. “Scarlet Traces” itself was an original comic sequel to the “War of The Worlds”, also adapted by this team.
Cracks in the British Empire as the war between Mars and Earth moves to the red planet. Subjugated countries are trying to break away from “Perfidious Albion”, Scottish secessionists are attacking prominent targets in the capital, to make matters worse the war on Mars has developed into a stalemate. But British High Command has a plan to bring the conflict to an end.
Investigatory journalist Charlotte Hemming returns from Africa and is tasked with investigating a high level conspiracy discovered by her newspaper editor. Avoiding certain death by government agents wanting to silence her, she makes her way to Mars to the heart of the conspiracy
If you’ve come in halfway through the story and either
a. not read “Scarlet Traces”
or like me
b. Got it in your Megazine back issues, but as those are in the attic in a box, under layers of dust, old games consoles and models kits and too lazy to fish them out don’t worry. It helps, but “the Great Game” can stand alone. It’s easy to revel in the gorgeous artwork from D’Israeli. Gorgeous colours, imaginative design, beautiful ships and with lots of little easter eggs and cameos in the panels. Kind of like “League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”, but not requiring a history of the last two centuries to get all the references.
Ian Edgington’s best work is in conjunction with D’Israeli (see also “Stickleback” and “Leviathan”). On his game, the Edge can draft a cracking tale. The team have lovingly created compelling characters and a believable world with lots of ’50’s science fiction magazine and Dan Dare esque technology, though the plot does remind me a little of “Dare”. Beautifully packaged, and it only cost me £2 – you can still find bargains on Ebay if you know where to look.
