Just to prove he’s still alive Richard writes up prog 1912. And also apparently refers to himself in the third person when he can’t think of an interesting review intro. Meh.
I’d never have pegged that as Mr Holden’s work which now makes me look like a shit when I say it’s brilliant. His stuff always is, this just doesnt look how I normally expect his art to look. That said as far as I know he’s been working almost exclusively on Dept of Monsterology for the last year so maybe his style has changed a bit with that. Still holding off buying the trade till I can pick one up at a con. Anyway, great stuff.
Well we’d probably have just been happy with that splash page alone. The rest is all very cool though and I’m liking the prospect of the action taking place on a remote space cruiser as hopefully that’ll make it more horror than action. Already the idyllic setup is being subverted and it’s starting to get creepy and the colouring is really bringing that out.The captains voice overs are reminding me of the audio logs you find playing horror games, this time though we’re getting to see events first hand.
Was also glad to see while this Dark Judges run is apparently non comedic there’s still Wagners black humour shining through – “Just died? Just like that?” “No, he did show some reluctance”. Class.
Art is living up to a year’s worth of expectation and I was impressed by Greg Staples cleverly showing the manta tank without anything else in the panel to scale it at all. You have to watch out about that. Some people get funny if they aren’t drawn exactly to 1985 xmas annual specs. -cough-
So thats it. The Volgs are out. The Invasion started back in prog 1 is over. You wanna take a second to let that sink in? The titular Invasion that kicked off the first strip in the first ever prog is over. Excuse me while I take a second to raise a glass… well, a can.
So other than that, which still seems to have been weirdly under-played, what do we get here? Well a lot of Mr Mills’ politics, which I’m not sure are getting less subtle or if I’m just noticing them more, and terrorism talk which this week does leave a slightly bitter taste in the mouth. Not quite sure where the strip is going to go from here, can’t see it becoming about Bill Savage, prospective MP for Lambeth. Imagine it’s going to go a bit Animal Farm to be honest. And thats in a “power making the good guys we put in power as bad as those we deposed” way not like the legendary video we all heard about in school and someone’s brother’s mate had always seen.
Art by Patrick Goddard is brilliant as ever and always makes me want to read old Battle comics. Interested to see where it goes next.
The Order –
Another “strong female character” seemingly totally defined by her daddy issues? Yay. Cant get enough of those. Apparently.
Your father was a hero (paraphrase)
“Yet to me he was distant and cold… YAAHHH!”. Really?
That said I’m still enjoying it. The robot head using clockwork to animate any body its dropped on was so left field I kinda loved it and there’s some nice humour running through it all.
Best of all the setting TOTALLY suits John Burns artwork and if it wasn’t written with him in mind its a perfect match up. Nice change of pace from everything else in the issue so I’m happy enough its in there.
Ulysses Sweet –
Not really sure what to say about this one. I did like it, especially the paranoid dialogue of the governor. Next week should be fun, Sweet hunted by a pair of constantly fucking hit…people. Cant see anyone getting offended by that. Fuck ’em. 2000AD shouldn’t be safe. We loved it coz we knew our parents wouldnt approve. Cant expect it to go Phil Collins now most of the readership are parents themselves.
Did anyone else play saboteur on the ZX Spectrum? That last panel on page two is the spit of the opening level. Really hope that’s intentional.
I really liked the art but some of the action was a little confusing. I wouldn’t have known Orlok shot through the other guy to get the others if it hadn’t been explained on the next page.
Good opening installment. Can’t say I was that excited to see an ongoing Orlok story but I’m definitely interested to see what comes next.
Pick of the prog? Has to go to Dredd this week.
