It may be the post Christmas blues or hallucinations brought on by too many Calimochos, but Orlok is imagining this story being remade for the 21st Century. Of course, it will do away with all periodic sensibilities and will instead feature Dredd and Walter in a Far And Away style tale complete with outrageous lunar accents…
DATELINE:
January 2100 (Prog 47).
WHO’S RESPONSIBLE?:
John Wagner drops a clanger or two but Brian Bolland makes a decent catch.
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT (IN ONE SENTENCE)?:
The Land Race for the Von Braun territory brings chaos.
WHO’S THAT IN THE HELMET?:
Judges Chico and Che call the Anti-Defamation League about their depiction.
IT’S CULTURAL, INNIT?:
The bad guys behind the land racket are IPC, which is a thinly veiled attack on the identically named owners of the comic who demanded that 2000AD creators sign over all rights to them. Like jerks.
WHAT THE DROKK?:
Chico and Che are obscene racial stereotypes.
Walter apparently has no issue pronouncing “trick”.
Rowena’s accent vanishes in the middle of the story. Maybe she puts it on just like Walter does with his speech defect.
How can robots develop actual feelings?
WHAT’S THE ART LIKE?:
Expressions and great designs abound and Bolland is also experimenting with the quirky nature of the Lunar peoples.
HOW MANY LINKS?:
I did like the dig at IPC as that is what the strip (and Prog) is known to be good at; needling those who take the piss. However, I’m still unsold on this Wild West stuff so just three links for this one.
