Orlok is dreading the day when a demanding robot car will pick him up from his home after a drunken Uber message, deposit him at the local garage and force him to get into the inspection pit before it dumps it’s sump all over him. Look, with the advent of robot sex dolls and Elon fucking Musk, you know this stuff is going to happen…
DATELINE:
February 2100 (Prog 53-56).
WHO’S RESPONSIBLE?:
John Wagner’s comedy chops shine through despite the story and Ian Gibson goes into overdrive.
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT (IN ONE SENTENCE)?:
A robo-car malfunctions and goes on the rampage.
WHO’S THAT IN THE HELMET?:
Judges San, Che, Gosnell, Chico, Pard and Jefferson J. Tex attempt to assist Dredd by being slightly less useless. They fail.
IT’S CULTURAL, INNIT?:
Elvis’s conversation with his master Dave may be a nod to the HAL/Dave Bowman conversation from 2001: A Space Odyssey. It certainly has the same undertones.
ANY LAW LORE?:
Judges Code consists of three lines and two dots and is used to relay information where speech isn’t possible.
About thirty Judges are killed by the robot car rampage.
WHAT THE DROKK?:
After capturing Dredd, Elvis is able to drive right into the command centre of the Justice Building. How does a car get through the doors and corridors and how does it get there unimpeded?
Why is Walter looking to get Dredd’s name on a rubber duck? Actually, best not to answer that.
How does Elvis, a car, get through the doors to Dredd’s apartment?
Dredd leaves it quite late to start a blaze in the car.
WHAT’S THE ART LIKE?:
Though magnificent and detailed it does look very busy in places and that works against it in some panels.
HOW MANY LINKS?:
Two links as the robot rampage is getting a little dull now. I’d like to award it more, but I’m not going to.
This week’s prog – 2062 – marks 20 years of glossy paper. Also, 20 years since the classic Dredd story ‘In The Year 2120’.
