Technically next in the list even though it ruins the flow of things, but fuck it, we’re here now and we have to deal with it. When people ask him where to start if they are going to begin reading Judge Dredd, Orlok usually points them right to this sorry tale. Mainly as he generally hates people and wants to see them stab themselves with a fork…
DATELINE:
June 2100 (Sci Fi Special 1978).
WHO’S RESPONSIBLE?:
The implausibly named William Nilly takes a shit on the typewriter and Brendan McCarthy has to draw it.
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT (IN ONE SENTENCE)?:
Android X13 is released from the delinquent androids home and begins to cause chaos.
IT’S CULTURAL, INNIT?:
During one of the murders, Patrick McGoohan can be seen in the background and Android X13 wears a Number Six badge in homage to The Prisoner.
X13 wears a Mad Hatter 10/6 in his hat a la Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland.
The android is also listening the Anarchy In The UK by the Sex Pistols.
ANY LAW LORE?:
Priority A requests come from Judges to have a case reassigned to themselves.
ANY TEETHING TROUBLES?:
Dredd watches police bulletins.
A Presidential candidate is assassinated by the android, even though the office of the President was abandoned in 2071 with Booth’s arrest.
Justice Central is called Judge HQ.
WHAT THE DROKK?:
A home for delinquent androids? Are you fucking kidding me?
Candidate Dixon is blatantly smoking a cigar when he is blown up and X13 is similarly puffing away when he is released from the home. Both are illegal acts.
X13 uses an overly elaborate plot to try and kill Dredd and if his goal is to kill the lawman, why does he kill lots of other people before then?
The floorboards conveniently collapse allowing Walter to escape, which is shitty plotting by the writer.
Walter rushes outside and just so happens to find a passing friend in a city of 800 million humans and hundreds of millions of robots.
How long is life in prison for an android?
Dredd technically assaults his subdued perp- a clear case of lawbreaking. Still, there are no witnesses.
WHAT’S THE ART LIKE?:
The artwork looks dense and eye catching but that’s it. As an early example of McCarthy’s unique talent it’s a curio but nothing special.
HOW MANY LINKS?:
Full of plot holes, convenience and poor choices. One link and that’s it.
