In the last of a short run of intermediate stories, Orlok revisits a steaming turd of a tale. This one didn’t have the good graces of being in a 2000AD or Judge Dredd Annual so back in the day, Orlok had to part with his hard earned shekels at a book fair to secure it. The day he finally got rid of it was a fucking blessing …
September 2100 (Dan Dare Annual 1979).
Mercifully the writer is unknown, but Kevin O’Neill does some mediocre art.
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT (IN ONE SENTENCE)?:
Ryan swears vengeance against the Mayor
WHO’S THAT IN THE HELMET?:
Chief Judge Clarence Goodman gives Dredd some stick over his last 8 perps not even reaching the morgue and lets Dredd off with his obviously fraudulent report.
ANY LAW LORE?:
Dredd invokes the Litter Act Section 1034 when Amalfi drops a banana skin.
Judge uniforms are armoured, apparently, especially when Amalfi lets loose with his gat.
Dredd is shot in the right arm above the wrist. It’s just a graze, though.
ANY TEETHING TROUBLES?:
Goodman gets a comm call from a Judge wearing a very odd helmet.
Amalfi is mentioned as being the Mayor but it is later revealed that Jim Grubb is the man in the mayoral seat and has been for 8 years.
WHAT THE DROKK?:
Dredd makes insulting comments to the Chief Judge concerning the mayor’s fatness.
Dredd takes his time reaching Amalfi when he is about to fall and openly lies in his report concerning the deaths of Mayor Amalfi and Ryan.
Dredd cracks a bad joke and even smiles at one stage.
Dredd drinks synthi caff even though it is apparently illegal.
Ryan worked in a morgue and was busted, leading to his incarceration underwater at Mega City Bay. No, really, it says that. Given that Ryan has been given gills, how is he able to operate above water and more to the point, why make him unchained and more mobile than his guards?
Walter is sniffing on the last page- why?
There seems to be some confusion about bananas being a rare commodity, even though the Apes Dredd has encountered prior to this are eating them.
WHAT’S THE ART LIKE?:
The first full colour Dredd strip but it’s weak sauce, sadly. Amalfi being dressed like Uncle Sam does the strip no favours and from the look of it, Dredd needs to lay off the carbs. I do like the layouts, though.
HOW MANY LINKS?:
Dredd is utterly out of character here and even some full colour art cannot help it. One link.
