Continuity busting tale or simply a fuck up? That’s what we have to contend with here. Fun fact- in a Scojo-like moment of brilliance, Orlok actually came up with a better solution to Vienna’s origins but unlike the aforementioned superfan, he never emailed it to Toothy editorial or wrote it on the walls in his own excrement…
John Wagner pens a human side to Dredd and Ian Gibson props up the tale with some excellent art.
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT (IN ONE SENTENCE)?:
Harry Carmen kidnaps Dredd’s niece, Vienna.
ANY LAW LORE?:
Dredd is asleep in bed at 4am (instead of using a sleep machine) and now sleeps with just his helmet on. Kinky.
Harry Carmen states that Dredd can only kill a perp if it will save a life. This is a far cry from the Judicial policy adopted in later stories.
WHAT THE DROKK?:
How does a convicted perp like Carmen get hold of Dredd’s direct number as well as the whereabouts of his family?
For that matter, why does Dredd regard Carmen as a murderer, even though he has only been put away for a computer swindle?
WHAT’S THE ART LIKE?:
Great stuff from Gibson, but sadly it can’t lift the strip.
HOW MANY LINKS?:
Apart from the stuff about Dredd pushing Vienna away due to the effect his death may have on her, this is ropey. Carmen is like a bad Bond villain and the inner monologue of Dredd is just, er, dreadful. Two links.
