To the more stupid members of the 2000AD community, this is the title of the story that precedes the Apocalypse War. Luckily for us, it isn’t as two back to back epics would be too much for our brains to handle. What we get instead is a look at the inner workings of the Council of Five, a “back to normality” day for Dredd and the return of Judge Giant, a man so dull he could be used as a test for narcolepsy.
John Wagner and Alan Grant cement their partnership and Brian Bolland’s art is sublime.
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT (IN ONE SENTENCE)?:
As Dredd deals with a block war his fate as a Judge is decided by the Council of Five.
WHO’S THAT IN THE HELMET?:
Giant helps Dredd put down the block war, calling him “JD”.
Hilda McGruder is head of the SJS and votes that Dredd is too rigid in his ideals.
Chief Judge Griffin exercises his veto on the Council.
Deputy Chief Judge Pepper sides with Ecks in sending a mission after the Judge Child.
Chief Accountant Quimby complains that Dredd kept no accounts.
Psi Chief Ecks reckons Feyy’s prediction was only about 70% accurate and wants another mission to recover the Judge Child.
Judge Dodge is in charge of the block war until Dredd shows up and takes over.
ANY LAW LORE?:
The Chief Judge may veto the decision of the Council.
Dredd employs an old school loudhailer to address the blocks.
The Halls of Justice are called “Justice HQ”.
IT’S CULTURAL, INNIT?:
Ernest Borgnine was an American character actor.
Rita Tushingham was a noted English actress.
Nijinkski may be a reference to the famous dancer or his namesake racehorse.
The shitty driver is wearing a 3000AD badge.
WHAT THE DROKK?:
When Quimby questions Dredd’s accounts keeping (or lack of) Dredd taps him on the head like a child. Nice respect for your colleague there, Joe.
It is established early on that McGruder is wearing earrings, but why would a Judge be wearing jewellery? Anderson, as a Psi Judge, would be allowed her quirks, but not a hardened officer like McGruder.
WHAT’S THE ART LIKE?:
Bolland’s work continues to be a thing of beauty.
HOW MANY LINKS?:
This is a great script and the first I can recall of a background of Judicial action versus some talking heads. It really flows well too and it was great to see the chaos of a fully underway Block War. Five links.
