The crimewave continues in the Big Meg and this time the online shopping market gets the once over from Old Stoneyface. Rather than publicly ask the Sovs to hack the criminals for him or go to the inept twats at Tek Div, Joe decides to contact a silver fox to help him crack the case. Enter Professor Burroughs, a man for whom the words “stump deep” take on a different meaning.
June 2103 (Progs 218-219).
John Wagner and Alan Grant predict the future of scamming while Colin Wilson’s pencils get a run out.
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT (IN ONE SENTENCE)?:
After a victim is dissolved with acid, Dredd investigates the numbers racketeers.
WHO’S THAT IN THE HELMET?:
Jaeger is a Tech Judge who helps Dredd identify the victim by narrowing that shit down.
Burroughs is a Tutor Professor who assists Dredd with the investigation because the current crop of Tech Judges are shit.
Smith is part of Dredd’s assault team on the mo-pad. At least according to the Prog’s cover- he isn’t actually seen inside.
This story dates itself with talk of computer tapes.
WHAT THE DROKK?:
The Centerside Underzoom appears to be a tunnel through bare rock. How are there bare rocks or undeveloped hills in Mega City 1?
Burroughs’ larceny scheme is sound but wouldn’t trouble forensic specialists who could extract the data from the targeted computers. Burroughs later explores the flaws in this plan later when he hacks into the Mopad computer.
Computer tapes are mentioned and Burroughs (despite being a computer expert) says “programme” instead of program.
WHAT’S THE ART LIKE?:
Detailed to the point of ridiculousness and it’s hard to pinpoint a favourite panel. Is it the simplicity of Dredd being reflected in the computer screen or the awesomeness of him jumping onto the top of the gigantic mopad? It’s notable here that Dredd seems to be developing that iconic chin. The only issue is the screen in the Academy being harder to read than a Thomas Hardy novel and the perp that Dredd slaps away from the screen having hands like a bunch of bananas.
HOW MANY LINKS?:
Five. I’m bumping up this standard tale up a notch for the insight into the Academy training and the art which is sexy as fuck. There’s also a nice touch as a fearful cit is co-opted into compliance by Dredd.
