The trouble with nuclear wars is that there are sometimes unintended victims. Anyone who has played the Fallout series of games knows full well the foulness of the mutated human ghouls that roam the wastelands looking like something from a Sunderland housing estate, but what of the animals in this scenario? Do they get hideously large and attack Tokyo? Or do they simply regress to voting Leave or kicking off on Greggs because they have a vegan range?
John Wagner and Alan Grant chuck out the chimps while Ian Gibson goes paintbox crazy.
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT (IN ONE SENTENCE)?:
In the ruins of Sector 301, irradiated apes are on the prowl.
Elbow and knee pads the wrong colour.
Dredd’s badge appears to be silver in at least one panel.
ANY LAW LORE?:
Bleepers are a tracking device and are good for up to 10km.
WHAT THE DROKK?:
Dredd says they are torturing humans but we don’t see clearly where this is taking place. Bizarrely, no humans appear to survive Dredd’s onslaught- did he just wipe everyone out or where they already dead?
WHAT’S THE ART LIKE?:
A great, though almost overwhelming use of colour paints the picture of the nuked landscape. It’s less detailed work than we are used to from Gibson but there is a circle panel to offset this cheek. His look of the apes is definitely more feral to get across the regression and he also has a nice few panels dedicated to brutal execution of the simian shitdogs.
HOW MANY LINKS?:
When the apes are revealed to be preying on citizens passing through, Dredd is quite ruthless. Whereas the apes may have had some citizenship status before, here they are monsters and no quarter is given to them. It’s quite depressing, actually as they didn’t really ask for this. Three links.
