Mistakes are made in life and then suddenly destiny takes an interest. For example, Orlok accidentally deleted the image he intended for this post and thus did a quick image search to find something appropriate. After googling “Destiny’s Angel Judge Dredd” this beauty came up. You should all go and have a look because it is at least as good as this story in print form…
September 2104 (Progs 275-277).
John Wagner and Alan Grant resurrect the dead while Carlos Ezquerra gets to draw some Angels..
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT (IN ONE SENTENCE)?:
The Judge Child attempts to kill Dredd, using Fink and Mean Angel.
WHO’S THAT IN THE HELMET?:
The psi- whammied Judge Warden Sobrani dies after being beaten by escaping perps.
Judge Hammark is chinned after he questions Sobrani’s actions.
Judge Watson and his awesome flat-top assists Dredd in the clean-up at Iso Block 666.
Chief Judge Hilda McGruder attempts to pull Dredd off…the case.
Judge Barbara Hershey reports that Mean Angel is alive and butting.
IT’S CULTURAL, INNIT?:
Gil Favor was the trail boss in the TV show Rawhide.
Rowdy Yates was Clint Eastwood’s character on the same show.
ANY LAW LORE?:
Some of the city’s worst perps are kept in Iso Block 666 on level K.
Judges are trained to resist paranormal interference.
The Chief Judge can sign an execution order on anyone, even those living on a distant planet. Mega City One is basically a terrorist state.
WHAT THE DROKK?:
The Resyk controller can track Dredd and Fink in the ducts, so why couldn’t he pinpoint Fink beforehand?
McGruder’s uniform has red pads and gloves that make her look like she is pulling some Scarlet Witch cosplay.
Mean was blown up on Xanadu, so who buried him and took the time to chisel out an epitaph on his tombstone?
If Judges are trained to resist paranormal interference, how does Sobrani succumb to mind control?
Presumably, Krysler cannot kill Dredd by mind controlling him, but can drop a mopad on him, like he does with the Judges pursuing Fink and Mean. Why doesn’t he just do this and get this done and dusted?
How does the hoverpod get from the city to the (presumably) fenced off desolation zone?
Dredd is shot up with the paralysing poison antidote before he goes after the Angels, but since Fink had only just mixed it, how did they get a sample to prepare an antidote?
How does Dredd’s helmet stay on when he is upside down?
After leaving the room, Fink manages to build the Pa Angel Mark 1 Super Scream Torture Machine in the time it takes Dredd to insult Mean and start a fight.
WHAT’S THE ART LIKE?:
I love the look of Ezquerra’s prison suits but the colouring on McGruder’s uniform is a little off. The overall artwork is good but not outstanding and Ezquerra was probably just too knackered after the Apocalypse War. It’s nice that Krysler gets destroyed in a circle panel, though.
HOW MANY LINKS?:
There is some quality old school Dredd ruthlessness in here where he deals with the perps holed up in the ruins and that is always refreshing to see. Krysler’s story coming to an end this way has a touch of the anti-climax and that’s probably unintentional. His pushing of fate (and having it push back) smacks somewhat of lazy way to deal with the loose end but it does work, regardless of the loss of both him and Fink as villains. While we’re on the subject of Fink, he isn’t so bad as he and his brother don’t seem that rapey (unlike his son Ratfink) but regardless, Maria is done with Dredd (and this strip) for the time being. The resurrection of Mean Angel was sort of hand wavy thing to bring back a much missed villain, but fuck it. Four links.
